Grandma’s Stories – Folk Tales Of Kashmir

Series in Kashmiri, Hindi & English

Series in Kashmiri, Hindi & English

There are numerous folk tales and legends in Kashmiri language, some transcribed, some not, forming part of the heritage we have inherited from our elders, and which we need to pass on to our future generations. J&K Academy of Art, Culture & Languages has done a marvellous job of preserving the academic treasure (which I call our Vasmath) by printing a series of Lúkû Kathû and Käshír Talmíh for public reading and posterity. Since the literature printed is in Nastaliq script only, it is not reachable to those who are not well versed with this script. I took up this job of writing many of these stories in Devanagari script in the early 2000 and published the content on net.

Lately, I have rewritten the tales as Grandma’s Stories (to reinvent the age-old passion of a grandmother narrating stories to grand children) in Devanagari-Kashmiri to reach the public knowing Dev-Kash script, as also in Hindi and English languages to reach those who are not well versed with the Kashmiri language, with an aim to reach readers outside Kashmir. Let outsiders too know a little about Kashmir’s literary treasures.

Posted in this series of Grandma’s Stories are the Kashmiri folk tales and Talmih in three languages viz Kashmiri (Dev-Kash Script), Hindi and English. I hope readers enjoy them and pass them on to their near and dear ones in the interest of the Kashmiri heritage.
